Crickhowell is a small welsh town located in the large county of Powys in Mid Wales. The place name of Crickhowell is taken from that of the nearby hill fort that dates back to the Iron Ages at the point of Crug Hywel situated above the town. Most of the population of the town speak both English and Welsh.
The town of Crickhowell is located on the banks of the River Usk at the most southern point of the Black Mountains. The town is also located within the eastern part of the national park of the Brecon Beacons. The surrounding countryside occupies about twenty thousand acres and most of this makes up the Glanusk Park estate. The town of Crickhowell has a population of about two thousand eight hundred.
The secondary school within the town is called Crickhowell High School and it has about six hundred and seventy pupils. In 2000 this secondary school was ranked seventy seventh for the best GCSE results within Wales. Since 2000 the school has greatly improved its GCSE results and this has led to the school holding nineteenth position amongst all the secondary schools in Wales and fourth position out of all the secondary schools in Powys.
One of the biggest landmarks within the town is Crickhowell Castle and this site also features the bridge over the River Usk. The bridge dates back to the seventeenth century. This site features some odd arches and there are seats built into the walls. St Edmunds church is a fourteenth century parish church.
