Five star accommodation

Britten House is a lovely Grade II listed Victorian townhouse, situated in the conservation area of South Lowestoft seafront. The area is locally known as Kirkley. From the moment you open the front gate and enter the front garden, you will feel the elegance and tranquility of a bygone age. Before entering the house please enjoy the stained glass windows in the inner hall which we had designed as a tribute to Benjamin Britten.

There is easy access along the extensive promenade, to the golden sands of our award winning, blue flag beach (the stretch in front of the house is patrolled by life guards). Local shops including a chemist, Victorian teashop, bakers, florist, small grocers are within a few minutes of the house. A pleasant 10 minute walk will take you into the center of Kirkley, which has been regenerated and has several interesting small shops. A further 10 minute stroll will take you over the bascule bridge into the main shopping centre of Lowestoft, where you will find high street names, an excellent library and a twice weekly market.

History

Benjamin Britten, Baron Britten of Aldeburgh was born in this house on 22nd November 1913. He began composing prolifically as a child and much of his inspiration came from the sunrise and far reaching sea views from his bedroom window.

Britten's status as one of the greatest English composers of the 20th Century is now secure among professional critics. Having previously declined a knighthood, Britten accepted a life peerage on 2 July 1976 as Baron Britten, of Aldeburgh in the county of Suffolk. A few months later he died of a heart attack.
