"Our favourite stop, our dream of English grace, charm, wit, humour and hospitality"

Welcome to Burghope Manor, where John and Elizabeth Denning provide visitors to their home with a quiet, informal stay amidst beautiful surroundings - you will not be disappointed. The historic town of Bradford-on-Avon, with its Saxon Church, is 2 miles away, and the manor, which is close to the Wiltshire/Somerset border, is ideally placed. The M4 motorway is only 20 minutes away by car - Heathrow Airport can be reached in 90 minutes - and by rail London is little more than an hour away by 125 inter-city express from either Bath Spa or Chippenham.

No country in the world has a richer, exciting or more romantic past than Great Britain - and Burghope Manor is a classic example of a medieval manor house.

Dating from the 13th Century, Burghope has strong links with the reign of England's most flamboyant and rumbustious monarch, Henry VIII. The Manor has associations with the King's prelate Archbishop Cranmer. The Cranmer Room at Burghope is made especially interesting by the large fireplace, engraved with Elizabethan writing, which fills almost the entire side of the room.

Burghope's links with the past go back many centuries further. During excavations, a curious leather shield was discovered which dates to the reign of Alfred the Great (848-899 AD). This shield is now in The Tower of London.

Winsley, as a typical country village, overlooking the glorious Avon valley, has its own special attractions - not the least being the Great British Institution of country pubs and restaurants serving traditional fare, within easy walking and driving distance of the Manor, the village pub,the Seven Stars is just a short walk through the old village from the main gates. The pub offers a wide choice of menu. There are also a number of gourmet-standard restaurants, including two close by. With Bath and Bradford-on-Avon so near, you will be able to share in the British way of life, feel the character of its people, and experience at first hand its customs, crafts and traditions.

Burghope is ideally situated for touring the West Country, a region of Britain with a unique and fascinating character of its own which still reflects its swashbuckling and mystical past. It is a land of legend and literature; of history and heroics....the bringing of the Holy Grail to Glastonbury; King Arthur and the Round Table; the Druids of Stonehenge and Avebury; Sir Francis Drake and the Spanish Armada; Thomas Hardy's Dorset; the Exmoor of Lorna Doone; the romance of the sea, its captains, pirates and smugglers. Then there is the West Country's own exotic food and drink - farmhouse cider; cream teas; Somerset apples and Cheddar cheese; Cornish pasties; - the list is almost endless.

For those seeking an active outdoor life it is the centre of an area which boasts superlative sports facilities which include golf, riding, fishing, horse racing and cricket. For the quieter moments there are theatres, museums and places of great historic interest, the magnificent cathedrals of Salisbury and Wells, and the Abbeys of Bath and Glastonbury.

Alastair Sawday's Special Places to Stay in Britain in association with Country Living Magazine ...A medieval manor house and all that goes with it, plus the necessary modern touches where they matter. It looks imposing, outside arched mullion windows, jutting gables, tall chimneys, while the interior is, quite breathtaking, manorial, with all the cultured trappings you would expect. Henry VIII housed Archbishop Cranmer here, so it seems appropriate that he is commemorated in the Cranmer room by a huge engraved Elizabethan stone fireplace. Bedrooms are sunny, luxurious and charming with views over the grounds. Bradford on Avon is delightful, and Bath is close by.

"A Guide to Garden Visits" , with welcoming places to stay - by Judith Hitching published by Michael JosephBurghope Manor - "You will rarely - very rarely - be able to stay in a home with as much history as this one. Mainly dating from the 13th century, Henry VIII's prelate Archbishop Cranmer knew it well, and the fireplace in today's living room is engraved with Elizabethan writing.Roots go back even further - excavations uncovered a curious leather shield dating to the reign of Alfred the Great in the 9th Century. The manor has been the family home of the Dennings for many years, and now they welcome guests to their stunning house which has wonderful furniture and is adorned with family portraits.Outside, in 2.5 acres of garden, are well-mown striped lawns, with some of the original borders still in place. The large double/twin bedrooms have all the modern comforts. If you want self-catering, the Dower House sleeps 6. You can walk to a good village pub/restaurant in the evenings."
