Ulverston
(The South Lakes Festival Market Town)

Lonsdale House Hotel, Local Area, 9K

Ulverston officially became a market town in 1280 and by the mid-1660's was also home to George Fox, founder of the Quaker Movement. Today people still hurry over the cobble streets visiting the various shops, enjoying the entertainment and visiting attractions like the Laurel and Hardy Museum.

Ulverston also has many places of entertainment which includes 39 inns, pubs and licensed restaurants, a cinema, theatre and concert hall.

Standing proudly overlooking Ulverston is the Sir John Barrow Monument on Hoad Hill, a popular place for short walks. On a good day looking out to Morecombe Bay you can see Blackpool Tower, Morecombe and even Ireland. Looking the other way, the peaks of the Lake District.

Lonsdale House was built in about 1787 by a member of the Fell Family. Known then as Daltongate Mansion, the building was set in an attractive position and is today perfectly located within the town. It later became a Gentlemen's Club during which time today's feature gardens was created. The high gothic style wall that borders the gardens was constructed during the First World War by men who were unable to fight. The wall now creates the perfect retreat from Ulverston's busy streets so you can enjoy a little peace and quiet after a satisfying day out.

Lonsdale House is about thirty minutes from Junction 36 on the M6. Follow signs for the A590 and Barrow-in-Furness. When you reach Ulverston turn right at the large roundabout and follow the one way system until you come to a small roundabout, turn left and follow the road until you cross a zebra crossing then take the first right. We are on the left hand side of this road.
