Chippenham

Chippenham situated on the River Avon is the largest town of the district. The buttercross in the Market Place is a reminder of its importance in serving the surrounding farming communities for over 1000 years.

The Saxon King, Alfred, chose it for his royal hunting lodge. Each Friday sees a busy livestock market as well as a colourful street market.

Bath

Bath has a 2000-year-old tradition of welcoming visitors to the city. The unique character of this World Heritage City is created by magnificent architecture set in beautiful landscapes.
Choice and quality are celebrated in the city's shopping, entertainment and cuisine.

The museum collections are unrivalled in the West of England. Beyond Bath, visitors can sample a range of famous attractions including stately homes, gardens, wildlife parks, caves and more.

Lacock Abbey

Within the picturesque National Trust village of Lacock, stands the former 13th century Abbey, founded as a nunnery. It retains the original medieval cloisters, chapter house and sacristy. In 1539, it was converted into a country house when a brewery was added and later the Great Hall and Gothic Archway.

It became the home of William Fox Talbot, who in 1835 invented photography here - his negative of the oriel window being the oldest in existence. Much of his work can be seen in the museum adjacent to the Abbey.

Bowood House and Gardens

Bowood is the magnificent family home of the Earl and Countess of Shelburne. It stands in glorious parkland with gently sloping lawns stretching away from the house to the lake beyond. Splendours within the park include the cascade waterfall, Doric Temple and terraced rose gardens.
The interior of the house contains a remarkable collection of family heirlooms built up over 250 years. These include Victoriana, Indiana, Silver, Porcelain and paintings.

For children, Bowood offer a truly outstanding Adventure Playground, complete with life-size pirate ship, giant slides, chutes and high level rope walks.

Castle Combe

Acclaimed as England's prettiest village, little has changed in 500 years. Cotswold stone cottages and the Market Cross nestle in the wooded valley of the By Brook trout stream, once a centre of the prosperous wool trade with its famous red and white cloth.

The manor was built using stone from the Norman castle that overlooked the village. Sir John Fastolf, 14th century Lord of the Manor, was reputedly the inspiration for Shakespeare's Falstaff and more recent fame came with the filming of Dr. Doolittle.
