| The family owned Cumberland Hotel is run by Guy and Helen Harmer. Our hospitality experience is wide and varied encompassing all aspects of catering, ranging from 4 star hotels, to a pair of 70 foot Narrow boats, which we ran as a floating hotel in the Canals and Rivers of England and Wales. We moved back on land in November 2001, in anticipation of the birth of our daughter Rachel in March 2002. Our aim is to provide a warm family welcome to all of our guests here either on business or for pleasure. We hope to offer some old fashioned hospitality as well as the benefits of home made food, and comfortable accommodation. The Hotel itself has stood proudly overlooking the river South Tyne for over 160 years and some of our bedrooms have beautiful views with a backdrop of the North Pennines.  We are situated at the foot of the main street, and at the end of one of the finest driving routes the country has to offer. Recently voted among the ten top drives in the World, the A686 passes right past our front door, and this journey from Penrith can be one of the most spectacular drives you will ever make. We hope that you choose to come to Alston to experience a truly unique atmosphere of this North Country Market Town from the surroundings of our thoroughly comfortable hotel. | Hotel Services The Cumberland Hotel offers facilities to suit you, whatever your reason for visiting Alston Moor. All of our bedrooms have en-suite facilities, and our five bedrooms can accommodate up to fourteen guests at a time, making us ideal for families and group bookings. We also pride ourselves on the quality of our food. Our fully equipped kitchen enables us to produce fresh and attractive meals made from fresh ingredients. Meals are served in our restaurant, or the lounge bar. Parties can be catered for with advanced notice, with a full meal for up to 30 people, or a Buffet for up to 80. Ideal for parties or special occasions. We are happy to accommodate special diets. The Cumberland Hotel is listed in the Good Beer Guide Cask conditioned ale is always available, and a wide variety of wine are also on offer. The Hotel also has a patio area for unwinding on those long summer evenings as the sun sets over the valley. We have car parking facilities, and can also securely store cycles overnight. We have arrangements for the drying of wet clothing, but most of all we offer a warm welcome at the end of a busy day. |
| Welcome to Alston & the North Pennines The North Pennines is an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty of almost 2000 square kilometers. It is landscape of moorland and river valleys with many beautiful and peaceful villages. Set at the very heart of this spectacular landscape, almost at the head of the South Tyne Valley is the town of Alston.  This Cumbrian town is the highest market town in England, at around 1000 feet. Alston is at a crossroads, with five through routes meeting here, and so is an important local centre, with a wide variety of amenities all within a few minutes walk of the cobbled front street, including specialist shops, galleries and tourist facilities. Industrial Heritage abounds in the area; the south tynedale railway, and local lead mining museums emphasize this; take a short walk from the town centre in any direction and you will find old industrial workings, now blending back into nature, leaving you to feel that you are in one of the few truly un-spoilt landscapes left in England. |
