| The History of the House. Close in the lee of the Cotswold Escarpment sits The Greenway, a welcoming and mellow Elizabethan Manor, virtually unchanged since its creation in 1584. The house began its long and varied history as the Little Shurdington Estate, built by a prosperous Lancashire wool merchant, William Lawrence. The estate remained in the Lawrence family for nearly three hundred years until 1854. After several changes of ownership, the name changed to The Greenway, taken from the pre-Roman road that runs along the side of the house. The house had been owned by an Archdeacon and was used during the Second World War as a headquarters for American Air Force officers. Eventually, the house was sold to the Austin family, who opened The Greenways as one of the first country house hotels in 1947. It has been privately owned and run since then. The Greenways enjoys an enviable reputation throughout the country for its peerless style and welcoming atmosphere. The ideal place to relax in one of Britain's loveliest areas, The Greenway will take you back in time to a bygone era and make you feel like the indulged personal guest of a genial host.
