"36 The Mall, standing in its own ground, has just entered the Bed & Breakfast portfolio of Montrose, but the owners have had many years experience of running a guest house. They have used that to provide high standards of accommodation and catering, but within a homely atmosphere. The property has just been thoroughly refurbished, with decoration and new furnishings perfectly in tune with the character of the structure."

Montrose is situated on the east coast of Scotland, between Aberdeen and Dundee. It's remarkably easy to get here and, once in the town, 36 The Mall is easy to find.

We are convenient for coach routes and the mainline railway station (the steam-powered 'Caledonian Railway' isn't far away either) and, if you arriving by car, there is ample parking.

If you intend travelling from London, the best option is to fly from London City airport to Dundee, then pick up a hire car. From elsewhere in the south-east, fly to Aberdeen airport and collect a car there.

Arriving in Montrose, head for the town centre. From the north, look for the roundabout where the town centre bypass bears right. Turn left just before the roundabout, then immediately turn right. 36 The Mall is the second property on your left. From the South, follow the town centre by-pass (Basin View) to the northern roundabout, where it rejoins the main road to Aberdeen. Turn right at the roundabout, then first left (North Street), and left again. 36 The Mall is at the end of the street - the second-last property on your right.

Montrose may be convenient for a trip to Aberdeen, Dundee or the beautiful Angus Glens, but there is a feast of things to see and do in the town itself.

The town's leisure centre is just a couple of minutes walk from 36 The Mall. The town has two 18-hole golf courses. The par 71 Medal is the fifth oldest course in the world and has been in use since 1562. It's a final qualifier for the Open Championship. The flatter and easier Broomfield Course, also a par 71, is also close by. Bowling, tennis - these and more are available to you.

Montrose's beach is really lovely and offers a great walk at any time of year. If shopping is your 'thing', the High Street has a good selection of local, specialist shops as well as big named stores. The town centre has been upgraded in recent years. Just sip coffee at a pavement cafe, watching the world go by. Lovely.

Nature lovers will make a bee-line for Montrose Basin. The Basin isa 2,000 acre nature reserve in the care of the Scottish Wildlife Trust. Head out of Montrose on the Dundee road, and you will find their visitor centre. There are a huge number of events there each year, and there are a number of hides for watching the wildfowl and wading birds. There's also another nature reserve at St Cyrus, to the north of the town.

On the road to Brechin, the House of Dun is a Paladian-style Adam property in the care of the National Trust for Scotland. The rooms offer an excellent insight into the lifestyle of the well-to-do of its time. And in the courtyard, you can explore workshops that interpret the work of the estate workers. Watch out for the gardener sharpening his scythe in the potting shed!

From Ferryden - now a suburb of Montrose, but once a fishing port in its own right - a footpath leads along the headland to the lighthouse at Scurdiness. It's a great walk at any time of the year!
