The Three Crowns Hotel occupies a very significant position in the history of Chagford and also stands as a fine example of the town's architectural heritage. The building itself dates back to the 13th century and was once the home of the Whyddon family who lived in Chagford for several centuries, including Sir John Whyddon who was a Justice of the King's Bench in the mid 16th century.

It was one of Sir John's descendants, Mary Whyddon who became a legend in Chagford following her death in 1641, shot on her wedding day as she returned from the church to her family home.

Two years later in 1643, as the Civil War raged, the Three Crowns witnessed another violent death when during a local skirmish, the young poet and Cavalier, Sydney Godolphin, was killed by musket fire and lay dying in the porchway to the Hotel. Although his body was removed and buried at Okehampton, Sydney still appears to be the Hotel's oldest resident!

Whilst retaining the essential character of this impressive building - its granite construction giving a feeling of immense solidarity - a considerable amount of work has been carried out in recent years to provide all the services and comforts expected of a modern hotel.

No visitors to The Three Crowns however can fail to capture the almost timeless atmosphere of a building that has such historical association.

The Hotel is open to residents throughout the year with parties especially catered for at Christmas-time, when the Boxing Day meet of the local hunt is a popular attraction.

After recent extensive improvements, all rooms have en-suite bath and / or shower, tea and coffee making facilities and colour television.

Residents and non-residents can look forward to enjoying a choice from the excellenta la carte menu or alternatively there is a good table d'hôte menu including lunch-time 'specials' and a variety of bar snacks all supervised by the resident chef. The Hotel boasts a fine cellar and offers a comprehensive selection of wines to complement your meal.

Musical evenings - "Chimney Corners" - are a traditional of the Three Crowns, where the skills of local musicians are greatly appreciated. On these occasions everyone can enjoy a versatile style of entertainment practised less and less in these days of recorded music. The setting is ideal.

Chagford

The little moorland town of Chagford, formerly one of the four stannary towns of Devon, plays host to a large number of visitors each year, many of them compelled to return again and again by the extraordinary fascination of Dartmoor.

Chagford is situated on the northern edge of the Dartmoor National Park, five miles south of the main A30 trunk road about 20 miles from Exeter. With its gift of scenic beauty Chagford has a great deal to offer to its visitors who cannot fail to appreciate the charm and vitality of this delightful town and the friendliness of its residents.

Approaching from the north a narrow winding road makes its way up into the Market Square and on either side, rows of houses built of local granite, some with thatched roofs, create a very pleasing first impression of Chagford. Many are several hundred years old including the very picturesque Bishops House which dates back to the 13th century and is of some historical significance.

The Market Square itself is in every respect the centre of the town. In the middle of the square stands Market House, a distinctive octagonal building and surrounding it is a variety of excellent shops selling a range of goods totally unexpected in a small town.

In the company of the local Parish Church, the other shops, houses and hotels, including the Three Crowns, make up a harmonious and picturesque group of buildings which contribute greatly to the character of the Town.

The countryside immediately surrounding Chagford is uncharacteristic of that of the higher open moorland and gives the visitor the chance to enjoy some idyllic scenery including walks along the Teign, one of Devon's most beautiful rivers. For those who wish to combine sporting activities with their visit,Chagford has plenty of offer. A new sports field has recently been constructed with tennis courts, football and cricket pitches; there is a swimming pool and a bowling green in the town and an 18 hole golf course less than 4 miles away. Licenses for fishing in local rivers are also available.

Dartmoor National Park

The 365 square miles of Dartmoor's countryside contains some of the most enigmatic landscapes to be found anywhere in England. Nowhere in the country are there such scenic contrasts as exists on Dartmoor, where the high rugged moorlands with their awe inspiring outcrops of weathered granite tors are interlaced with swift flowing rivers cutting their way dramatically through beautiful wooded valleys. There are parts of the moor that because of their isolation, remain virtually hidden to visitors and where only the properly equipped walker is advised to venture. There are however numerous places of instant appeal that are easily accessible by car with perhaps a short stroll to complete the journey.

Dartmoor overlies a great mass of granite, weathered and fashioned during the glacial periods, from which its most characteristic natural features, the strangely shaped tors and rocky outcrops were formed. Whilst Dartmoor's beauty in all its varying aspects is readily apparent, this remarkable land has another side - a mysterious world that needs to be explored in order to discover its many secrets.Dartmoor has been described as a timeless place and through its isolation many ancient monuments dating back to the Bronze Age seem to confirm this feeling.

An abundance of plant and wildlife provides an added interest to any walk across the moor. Buzzards, kestrels, sparrow hawks and heron are common throughout the area and gorgeous dragonflies can be seen along thebanks of the many streams. Dartmoor has several reservoirs which provide a sanctuary for a variety of wildfowl and are well worth a visit, especially Fernworthy which is only a short distance from Chagford.

Amidst the Dartmoor countryside there are many places of popular appeal such as the historic Buckfast Abbey or the picturesque Buckland in the Moor and of course Widecombe, immortalised by Uncle Tom Cobley and a certain grey mare. A visit to the Miniature Pony Centre near Chagford or the Dart Valley Steam Railway will be of particular interest to the children.

AND AT THE END OF THE DAY A WARM WELCOME WILL BE AWAITING YOUR RETURN AT THE THREE CROWNS HOTEL.

WE DO HOPE THAT WE WILL SEE YOU SOON.
