The town of Lochgilphead was developed as a planned housing settlement and it was created in 1790. The town was planned shortly after the completion of the road that runs between Campbeltown and Inverary. The Crinan Canal was constructed during 1801 and this led to the town to become a more prominent link across the Kintyre Peninsula.
During July 1982 the town of Lochgilphead competed in the television show that is known as it's a Knockout and they competed against teams from Oban and Perth. The town won its rounds and then later it went on to compete in the international version of the show.
