Skipton, whilst being a very small market town located in the northern parts of England manages to attract thousands of tourists every year, thanks to the numerous attractions and landmarks it has to offer within its own boundaries, as well as being an ideal stop off point for those people wishing to take a visit to the Yorkshire Dales.
No visit to Skipton could ever be complete without a trip to Skipton Castle, an ancient castle that has stood and survived for over 900 years and is a relic from the Norman Conquest. Skipton Castle has endured a great deal of history as well as its fair share of abuse, in particular, suffering at the hands of Oliver Cromwell who ordered the roofs of the Castle to be torn down in a particularly nasty display of rage. He did not want the castle to be torn down completely however, because he wanted it to stand so that all could see how he had managed to conquer and dominate it as well as the Royalist movement.
In commemoration of the three year siege between Cromwell and the Royalist supporters who had taken refuge within the walls of the castle, Lady Anne Clifford planted a yew tree in the arbor of the courtyard. Remarkably, the tree has survived almost 300 years later, and still stands majestic in its pride.
Also of note, and certainly worth a visit is the Pendle Hills which were the site of many a witch trial, and with many witches burnt at this spot. Don't let the bloody history put you off, this gorgeous and immensely scenic natural area.
