No longer used for star-gazing, the City Observatory is now home to the excellent Edinburgh Experience.
|
Sir William Playfair built the City Observatory, situated on the top of Calton Hill, in 1818 for his astronomer uncle, John Playfair. However air and light pollution meant that it couldn't be used for its intended purpose and so the Royal Observatory was soon established on Blackford Hill to replace it. | |
Nowadays the City Observatory is home to the Edinburgh Experience, a 3D audio-visual display of the history of the city. Very well done, the show should keep the kids amused for a while. Performances take place daily from April to October and generally last around 20 minutes. Admission costs £2 for adults. |
