Edinburgh Town Guide, Flodden Wall, 4K

In 1513 the Scots were defeated by the English during the Battle of Flodden. Fearing an invasion the citizens of Edinburgh hastily started to build a defensive wall around the city, known as the Flodden Wall.

And it was this immovable boundary around the Old Town that caused much of the cramped conditions in the that led to the need for the New Town development in the 18th century.

Over the last few hundred years the wall gradually fell into a state of disrepair and so today only a few sections of the wall remains. The best preserved of these is a tower located in Greyfriars Kirkyard in the Grassmarket, just to the south-east of the Castle.
