Edinburgh Town Guide, Scottish Food, 6K

If you eat out in Scotland, you can expect a good variety of food to choose from. Most large towns will have a cosmopolitan feel with everything from Chinese and Indian to French and Mexican food being served.

In addition, there will be loads of restaurants serving what you might consider "British" food. However, Scotland can also be said to have its own distinct cuisine, so it would be worth finding places to eat that serve Scottish fare.

The main foods that Scotland is famous for include fish, game and of course the national dish, Haggis. But it is worth remembering that Scotland is also renowned for less obvious foods including porridge and marmalade.

Edinburgh Town Guide, Haggis, 1K Haggis is of course Scotland's most famous dish, although most people are put off from trying it. Not surprisingly when the ingredients are minced offal mixed with oatmeal and onions and cooked in a sheep's stomach! But if you can face the ingredients, the result is delicious and well worth a try.

Edinburgh Town Guide, Fish, 1K And when it comes to fish, Scotland is definitely the place to go. Famous the world over for its salmon, don't forget to also try Scottish kippers or haddock which also tend to be excellent. (Make sure that when you order fish you will receive the wild version which is always tastier than farmed fish).

Edinburgh Town Guide, Game, 1K You will also be spoilt for choice with meat. For a start there is the Aberdeen Angus, which is famous all over the world for its beef. Game is also popular in Scottish cooking and the Highlands in particular has a good reputation for the quality of its hare, pheasant and in particular, venison.

And there are plenty of other national dishes worth trying, including cock-a-leekie soup (a chicken soup), stovies (a hearty potato and onion stew), bridie (a meat and potato pie) and of course Scotch broth (a soup of barley and mutton).

Edinburgh Town Guide, Shortbread, 1K When it comes to something sweeter, there is always traditional Scottish shortbread, although for something extra special try to get some that is home-made.

But you will find plenty to choose from with Scotland's other excellent puddings - try the Cranachan if nothing else! Scottish bakeries are also very good for cakes and pastries, including the famous Dundee fruit cake.
