Edinburgh Town Guide |
Located on the High Street section of the Royal Mile, this is the house that John Knox is believed to have lived in between 1560 and 1572. |
Knox is famous for being the founding father of Scottish Presbyterianism. Minister of the High Kirk of St Giles during the 16th century, Knox was a central figure in the Scottish reformation and is reputed to have had several arguments with Mary Queen of Scots on the subject of religion. | |
Dating from the early 16th century the three storey house is an excellently restored example of an Old Town home. And inside there is now a museum dedicated to Knox's life and work. There is also a section of the house dedicated to another past resident, royal goldsmith James Mosman whose work included the Crown of Scotland, now on display at Edinburgh Castle. John Knox's House is open daily except Sundays from 10am to 4.30pm. Entry costs around £2 for adults. |
