Edinburgh Town Guide |
The Scottish National Portrait Gallery is located on Queen Street in the New Town. |
The elaborate exterior of the gallery is impressive in its own right, and it gives you an idea of the excellent gallery inside. As soon as you enter the building the main hall is decorated by some fantastic murals depicting Scottish history. And as you would expect the vast majority of Scotland's famous figures are featured somewhere or other in the gallery's collection, making a look round an interesting tour of history. But whilst it is often the subject matter that is interesting in itself, it is worth noting that many of the works are also excellent paintings in their own right. The gallery is open daily from 10am to 5pm Mondays to Saturdays and from 2pm to 5pm on Sundays. Admission is free. |
