Edinburgh Town Guide, Tolbooth St John's Kirk, 6K

Tolbooth St John's Kirk is a church located at the bottom of the Castlehill section of the Royal Mile.

Edinburgh Town Guide, The Kirk, 1K St John's Kirk is one of the most distinctive churches in the whole of Edinburgh, not least because at 240 feet it has the highest spire in the whole city.

Built in Victorian neo-Gothic style, it was designed by Augustus Pugin, who was also the architect of London's Houses of Parliament. And as you would expect the result is a dramatic and intricate exterior.

It hasn't been in use as a church since the early 1980s, and so it is now mainly used as an administrative centre during the Edinburgh International Festival.
