The excellent Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum is located in Kelvingrove Park in the heart of Glasgow's West End.

The building was built in 1901 at the height of Glasgow's industrial prosperity and was funded by the city's wealthy industrialists. And even today the elaborate red brick Victorian exterior is clear evidence of the city's pride and confidence at the time.

Initially the building was built to house an International Exhibition that was held that year, and as soon as the exhibition was over it was converted into an art gallery and museum.

Right from the start it gained an excellent reputation, and today it is still definitely worth a visit.

Downstairs are the museum galleries with sections covering areas such as natural history, Scottish archaeology and military history. There is also a massive pipe organ, which is used for the occasional recital.

Upstairs is the Art Gallery section, which contains an excellent collection of Scottish art, together with 19th and 20th century art from around the world. Highlights include works by Raeburn, Rembrandt, Picasso, Van Gogh and Hockney.

And as you would expect of a Glasgow gallery, there is a room dedicated to the life and work of Charles Rennie Mackintosh, with some excellent examples of his furniture.

The Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum is open daily from 10am to 5pm. Admission is free.
