The British Library was formed in 1973 after the collections of the British Museum, the National Central Library and the National Library for Science and Technology were amalgamated.
For many years the British Library was housed in the British Museum's main building in Great Russell Street. But an ever-expanding collection has meant that the Library has recently been moved to its present location in Euston Road.
It is not surprising that the collection has required more space, for by law all publishers in the UK must send a copy of every book, magazine and newspaper that is printed to the British Library. As a result the library contains hundreds of thousands of publications, and it is the research library of choice for many academic researchers all over the world.
The British Library is open daily but hours vary so do check in advance.
Highlights of the British Library's collection include:

- The hand-written manuscript of Lewis Carroll's Alice in Wonderland, along with his original illustrations;
- The Magna Carta from 1215 that first regulated the Monarch's power and established personal rights in Britain;
- The 7th century illustrated Celtic Lindisfarne Gospels;
- hand-written musical manuscripts by Brahms;
- Original drafts of Beatles songs;
- Numerous centuries-old maps including a world map dating from AD1000, and one of Britain dating from the 13th century.
