The Clink Prison was a private prison attached to Winchester Palace that once stood on this site. The prisoners that were held here ranged from heretics, prostitutes, priests and even actors!
The prison burned down during the Gordon Riots of 1780, but its reputation was so infamous that its lasting legacy has been the expression "in the clink" - a slang term meaning in prison that is still used to this day.
This museum re-creates the dismal conditions of the prison, and gives you some idea of the morals of the time. It is open daily from 10am-6pm. Admission costs around £4 for adults.
