Golden Hinde

St Marie Overie Dock, Cathedral St, SE1
Nearest Tube: London Bridge

This floating museum is a reconstruction of Sir Francis Drake's famous ship, which in the 1570s became the first English ship to circumnavigate the globe.

The replica was built in the 1970s and for more than 20 years it acted as a travelling museum, circling the globe and crossing the Atlantic and Pacific oceans twice each. Now it is permanently berthed on the banks of the Thames next to Southwark Bridge.

It gives you a graphic idea of the conditions Drake and his sailors lived in whilst they were at sea, the cramped living spaces being enough to make you glad you weren't sailing with Drake.

The Golden Hinde is open daily from 9am to sunset. Admission costs around £2.50 for adults.
