Greenwich Park

Nearest station: Greenwich BR station

This is the oldest of London's Royal parks, dating back to the 15th century, and today it has got to be one of the best parks in London. Not as busy as the central London parks such as Hyde Park, Regent's Park and St James's Park, it is both peaceful and beautiful.

It was partly designed by the French landscape designer André Le Nôtre, who also landscaped the gardens of the Palace of Versailles. It was first opened to the public in the late 18th Century.

There are some lovely walks, a beautiful rose garden and lots of leafy avenues and wide open areas. And in the south-east corner of the park is a fenced off area that is home to some deer - descendants of the herd that were introduced to the park by Henry VIII (1509-47) in 1515.

On top of the hill in the centre of the park is the Old Royal Observatory, built in 1675. From this hill you can get fantastic views of the surrounding area and across the river to Canary Wharf.
