The area of London known as Kilburn is situated to the north-west of central London, just north of Maida Vale and St John's Wood.
The main thoroughfare of the district is the Edgeware Road, which dates back to Roman times when it was the main route from London to Chester.
Because the district has always had a well-travelled route through its centre, it has a long association with travellers' inns and hostelries. So some of today's inns in the district date back as far as the 15th century.
By the early 18th century Kilburn had become a fashionable spa resort - the water was said to contain more carbon dioxide than any other waters in England.
But it still remained largely undeveloped for, like so many areas of London, it took the railways' arrival in the late 19th century for any real expansion to take place. But once the railway had arrived Kilburn soon developed into a buzzing residential and commercial area.
Nowadays the district has a multi-cultural feel with, among others, Irish, West Indian and Middle Eastern communities.
