Leighton House
12 Holland Park, W14
Nearest Tube: High Street Kensington
This house, built in 1866 by the artist Lord Frederick Leighton, is situated in Holland Park. Prominent in Victorian artistic circles, Lord Leighton was President of the Royal Academy from 1878 to 1896.
His intention was to build a house in which to display his fine art and decorative arts collections. It looks simple enough from the outside, but once you get inside it is a sumptuous and exotic delight, taking its inspiration from the Middle East. The highlight of the interior has to be the fabulous Arab Hall, built in 1879.
But equally worth visiting for is the collection of paintings from Lord Leighton's collection that are on display here. Highlights include his collection of Pre-Raphaelite works. There are also temporary exhibitions held throughout the year.
Leighton House is open daily except Sundays, 11am to 5.30pm. Admission is free.
