Lewisham District

Lewisham is the district of south-east London that lies between Brockley and Blackheath.
Like so many parts of outer London, Lewisham was a rural area for much of its history. Aside from agriculture the main industries of the area centred around the mills on the River Ravensbourne.
But by the 18th century Lewisham had become a fashionable residential district for wealthy families. And so there were soon several mansions built in the district, including The Limes where John Wesley is known to have stayed.
Lewisham remained cut off from London until the mid 19th century when industrialisation and the expansion of London reached the district. The area was soon covered with housing and shops and became a popular middle class suburb.
In the latter part of the 20th century Lewisham has undergone considerable re-development and whilst it still retains some of its Victorian elegance, the district is now a typical London suburb.
