Madame Tussaud's is one of London's most famous, and most popular, tourist attractions. As a result the queues are legendary, often lasting hours. The best way to avoid them is to visit the Planetarium first, as it is linked to Madame Tussaud's, or to make sure that you book tickets well in advance.
The exhibition of wax models actually dates back nearly 200 years and began when the legendary Madame Tussaud arrived in London with models of the heads of aristocrats killed in the French Revolution.
Today the exhibition has models from all walks of life and is divided up into several areas. The first area you enter is the 'Garden Party', which has models of sporting heroes, film stars, modern day politicians and lots of other contemporary celebrities on display. This section tends to be very busy, as it is usually full of tourists having photos taken of themselves next to their hero.
The next area is called '200 years' and includes Madame Tussaud's first waxwork model, the figure of Louis XV's mistress Madame du Barry alongside various 'old-favourite' celebrities. Models of political figures, and world leaders are to be found in the Grand Hall, which is where you will also find models of the British Royal Family.
In the basement is the Chamber of Horrors, which has harrowing scenes of historical atrocities alongside waxwork models of infamous serial killers. Although this is the most popular section, it is definitely not for the faint hearted or very young children.
The newest addition to Madame Tussaud's is a 'Spirit of London' time ride. You sit in a mock black taxicab and are driven through a five-minute potted history of London. This ride is becoming very popular as it is not only visual, but also includes the sounds and even the smells from each period of London's past.
Opening hours for Madame Tussaud's vary throughout the year, so do check first before you go.
Madame Tussaud's is linked to the Planetarium next door, so but if you plan to visit both, it is more economical to buy a joint, all-inclusive ticket.
