Inigo Jones designed this house in 1616 for Anne of Denmark, wife of James I (1603-25). Anne died before it was completed and so it was Charles I's wife, Henrietta Maria, who lived here.
When Inigo Jones designed it, he looked to the Italian Renaissance for inspiration. And as a result this is essentially the first classical building in Britain, which makes it an extremely important building in the history of British architecture.
The opulent interior is furnished as it was in the 17th Century. Of particular interest is the Great Hall, whose dimensions make it a perfect cube, although unfortunately the paintings are not the originals.
The Queen's House is open from 10am-6pm Mondays to Saturdays and from noon-6pm Sundays. The admission fee is around £6 but this includes entry to the National Maritime Museum and the Old Royal Observatory as well.
