Regent Street

W1
Nearest Tubes: Oxford Circus, Piccadilly Circus

Regent Street is at a right angle to Oxford Street and it too is synonymous with shopping. It stretches from Mortimer Street in the north, through Piccadilly Circus, to Pall Mall in the south. As a result it acts as a dividing line between the exclusive district of Mayfair and its shoddier neighbour Soho.

The street was built in the 1800s by Sir John Nash to connect Carlton House, George IV's (1820-30) residence, to Regent's Park. Much of the original design of the street has disappeared, but you can still get an idea of Nash's plans in the curve known as the Quadrant just north of Piccadilly.

The shopping in this street is slightly more up-market than Oxford Street with less high street stores. Some well-known shops that are situated on Regent Street are Liberty and Hamleys which is the world's largest toy store.

Nearby is Carnaby Street, which was the epitome of cool in the 1960s and which is gradually coming back into fashion again. Other shopping areas nearby are Oxford Street, Piccadilly and Bond Street
