First built in 1663, this is the oldest of the West End's theatres. This was the first theatre in England to allow women to appear on the stage and Nell Gwynne, Charles II's famous mistress, made her stage debut here in 1665. She was the first of many famous actors and actresses to perform here.
The first theatre to be built here burnt down in the Great Fire of London, and it was re-built by Christopher Wren. This building then also burnt down in the early 19th century and so the present Theatre Royal is the third theatre to be built here.
Legend has it that the Theatre is haunted by the ghost of a man whose skeleton was found with a knife in the chest in 1840. The ghost is said to most often appear in the Circle during matinee performances.
Since 1989 the show that has been performed at the Theatre Royal has been Miss Saigon, the haunting musical of ill-fated love during the Vietnam War.
