Wembley District
The outer London district of Wembley is today synonymous for one thing - the hallowed turf of Wembley Stadium, home to British football and the FA Cup Final. It was built in the 1920s as a general athletics and entertainment venue, however over the years the 100,000-seater stadium has become most associated with football.
The area of Wembley has been settled since Saxon times when it was called Wemba Lea. It was rural for most of its history, and it wasn't until the 19th century that the district began to be developed. Like many parts of outer London the impetus for this was the arrival of the railway.
Some of the architecture of today's Wembley dates from the Victorian period although much more of the district only dates from the early 20th century. Modern Wembley is a typical suburban district of London, although the Stadium does ensure that it attracts more visitors than many other districts.
