    City Walls

Ever since the Roman fort of Pons Aelius was built here, Newcastle has had a strong defensive role to play in protecting the northern border of England.

As a result walls began to be built around the city in the middle of the 14th century, and it took nearly a hundred years to complete them.

Little wonder when you realise that the walls were between 15 and 25 feet high, and between 7 and 10 feet deep! This made them amongst the most impressive city wall in the whole of medieval England.

Some parts of the walls, and some of the towers that were constructed along them, remain today. Perhaps the best surviving piece is the area behind Stowell Street to the west of the city centre.

This stretch was once part of the West Wall and, along with a reconstruction of the ditch, it gives a striking insight into how formidable a defence the walls once were.
