Nottingham Town Guide, 11K Located about 12 miles to the north of Nottingham, Newstead Abbey is well worth a visit for any literary buffs.

The house was originally part of an Augustinian priory that was dissolved during the reign of Henry VIII in the 16th century.

However, the Newstead Abbey is most famous for being the home of that great English writer and poet Lord Byron in the early part of the 19th century.

Today the house has been extensively restored and it contains memorabilia from the writer's life, including original manuscripts and first editions.

The grounds are also well worth a visit with over 300 acres of gardens brought to life by some magical water features.

Newstead Abbey is open daily between April and October, from noon to 6pm. The grounds are open all year. Admission to the grounds costs around £2.00 for adults, for the grounds and the house it costs around £4.00.
