Mary Arden's House

Mary Arden was Shakespeare's mother, and before her marriage she lived in this cottage in the village of Wilmcote, 4 miles west of Stratford.

Today Mary Arden's House is home to the Shakespeare Countryside Museum, which tells the story of rural life in Shakespeare's era and farming over the last four centuries.

You can learn about the typical crafts and trades of the time such as weaving, wheel making and blacksmithing.

And there are plenty of farm animals, including some rare breeds. However, for many the highlight of any visit are the superb falconry displays.

You could walk or cycle to the cottage if you are particularly energetic, however most people prefer to use the regular bus service from the city centre.

Mary Arden's House is open daily, but opening hours vary according to season so do check in advance. Admission costs around £4.50 for adults.

This attraction is administered by the Shakespeare Birthplace Trust, who also run 4 of Stratford's other top tourist attractions. A joint ticket for all 5 Birthplace Trust properties will save you some money.
