Shakespeare's Birthplace is Stratford's top tourist attraction, with over half a million people visiting it each year.
The attraction that you see today consists of two seperate houses that originally stood here. These have been substantially altered over the centuries, but they still give an idea of how things must have looked in the 16th century.
Shakepeare's father and mother moved to the left hand house in 1550, and the Great Bard was born there 4 years later.
It appears that John Shakespeare was a successful businessman, possibly a glover, for in 1556 the family bought the adjacent property.
Today the houses have been extensively restored and are home to the hugely popular Shakespeare Birthplace Museum.
The part that was the original family home is now a recreation of a typical sixteenth century house, whilst the right hand part of the building is dedicated to the life and work of the famous poet.
Shakespeare's Birthplace can be found on Henley Street, to the north of the city centre. It is open daily, but opening hours vary according to season so do check in advance. Admission costs around £5.00 for adults.
This attraction is administered by the Shakespeare Birthplace Trust, who also run 4 of Stratford's other top tourist attractions. A joint ticket for all 5 Birthplace Trust properties will save you some money. |
