Holy Trinity Church

This pretty 13th century church, situated on the banks of the River Avon, is where Shakespeare was buried after his death in 1616.

He was buried in the privileged position of within the church chancel, an honour that was bestowed on him not because he was a famous playwright, but because he was a lay-rector of the parish.

The graves of Shakespeare's wife, and several other members of his family, can also be seen alongside him.

And above the tomb you can see the famous bust of Shakespeare made in 1623 by Gerard Jansen. Although made after Shakespeare's death, his wife Anne Hathaway was still alive at the time and so it is believed to be the most authentic likeness of the poet.

The church also contains the Parish Register that gives us most of our scant knowledge about the man, including his baptism date and funeral date.

Holy Trinity Church is open daily, but opening hours vary according to season so do check in advance. Admission to the church is free, but there is a token for entry to the chancel of around 50p for adults.
