Anne Hathaway was Shakespeare's wife, and this is the cottage that she lived in before their wedding in 1582.
Originally known as Newlands Farm, the cottage (actually a substantial 12-roomed farmhouse) had over 90 acres of land attached to it, and so it is clear that Anne came from a wealthy family.
At the time of their wedding Anne was 26 years old and William was just 18 - and as their first child was born just 6 months later you can put two and two together!
The pretty thatched cottage contains many original 16th century furniture and furnishings, and so it provides a valuable insight into everyday life in Shakespeare's time.
Visitors are often particularly amused to see the "second best bed" that Shakespeare left to his wife in his will!
The cottage's gardens and orchard are especially attractive, and on a hot summers day are a delight to wander round.
The plants and herbs have been carefully selected in order to recreate an authentic Elizabethan garden - they are all native plants that would have been found in the area when Shakespeare was alive.
Anne Hathaway's Cottage lies in the village of Shottery, about a mile from the city centre. It is within walking distance (about 15 minutes) but there is a regular bus service from the city centre if you prefer.
The cottage is open daily, but opening hours vary according to season so do check in advance. Admission costs around £4.00 for adults.
This attraction is administered by the Shakespeare Birthplace Trust, who also run 4 of Stratford's other top tourist attractions. A joint ticket for all 5 Birthplace Trust properties will save you some money. |
