New Place and Nash's House

Nash's House, and the adjacent remains of New Place, can be found on Chapel Street right in the heart of the city centre.

Nash's House was once the home of Thomas Nash, who was married to Shakespeare's granddaughter, Elizabeth Hall.

The house has now been restored to reflect its 17th century origins. It contains a museum dedicated to the history of Stratford and in the grounds there is a beautiful Elizabethan knot garden.

The grounds of Nash House also contain the foundations of New Place, the house to which Shakespeare retired in 1610 and where he died a few years later.

Unfortunately New Place was torn down in 1759 by the then owner Reverend Francis Gastrell, who had become fed up with the vast numbers of visitors the house attracted.

Gastrell was also responsible for cutting down a famous mulberry tree, which was said to have been planted by the Great Bard himself.

However today you can visit a replacement mulberry tree, which, legend has it, was planted from a cutting from the original one.

Nash's House and New Place are open daily, but opening hours vary according to season so do check in advance. Admission costs around £3.30 for adults.

This attraction is administered by the Shakespeare Birthplace Trust, who also run 4 of Stratford's other top tourist attractions. A joint ticket for all 5 Birthplace Trust properties will save you some money.
