All Saints Church | |
| All Saints Church, with its elaborate octagonal "lantern" tower, is located on High Ousegate in York's city centre. The first mention of the church was in the 11th century Domesday Book, making All Saints Church one of the oldest churches in York. The purpose of the interesting open-sided tower was so that a lantern could be hung there as a beacon for travellers trying to find their way to the city at night. Nowadays a light still shines in the tower, but now as a war memorial. Another interesting feature of the church is the original 13th century knocker on the door, which is known as a sanctuary knocker. Anyone who touched the knocker could claim sanctuary in the church and was immune from arrest until leaving. All Saints Church is open to the public daily and it is well worth a visit for it is regarded by many as York's best preserved medieval church. |
