Guildhall |
York's Guildhall is located to the south-east of Stonegate, next to the river. The first Guildhall to be built on the site was in 1256, and it was then re-built in the 15th century. Since the early 19th century the hall has been used as York's administrative centre, a tradition that continues to today. The hall was badly damaged by bombs during World War II, but has been extensively restored since. Although the huge Common Hall is not the original and only one of the Victorian stained glass windows has survived, you can get some idea of the hall's former glory. The Guildhall is open to the public on most days, but times vary so check in advance. Entry is free. |
