the Ouse and the Foss
York Town Guide, White Rose of York, 1K

York has two rivers running through it - the River Ouse and the River Foss (the River Ouse being the larger of the two).

These rivers have played a major part in York's development, not least because the original Roman town of Eboracum was founded around the strategic point where the two rivers join.

The rivers were also important in establishing York as an important trading port, firstly during the Viking era, but also in subsequent centuries.

Today the Rivers present a peaceful and picturesque side to the city, offering gentle riverside walks and pretty bridges over the river. There are also plenty of boat trips available which allow you to view York from a more unusual angle.

In addition each January the rivers are the venue for York's annual Viking boat race, which is part of the Jorvik Viking Festival.
