Situated in the heart of York's Museum Gardens, you will find the picturesque ruins of St Mary's Abbey.

The original Abbey was a Benedictine monastery that was founded in 1080. Several buildings were added over the years including the 14th century Hospitium and the 15th century St Mary's Lodge.

Then, like so many of England's monasteries, after the Dissolution of the 16th century St Mary's Abbey fell into disrepair, leaving the ruins that you see today.

Today the interesting Yorkshire Museum is located in the former grounds of the Abbey, in the basement of which you can see an exhibition that reconstructs Abbey life.
