St Williams College, situated in College Street just around the corner from York Minster, is one of York's most impressive half-timbered houses.

The first house to be built here was built for York's first Archbishop, who was also the great-grandson of William the Conqueror - hence the name.

The present building dates from the 15th century when it was home to the Minster's chantry priests - priests who sang mass for those who had made donations to the cathedral.

Today the house is an interesting visitor's centre for the nearby York Minster. It is open daily but times vary according to season so it is best to check in advance.
