The town is located on the UK's Jurassic Coast, a World Heritage Site that stretches almost one hundred miles from Exmouth to Swanage. The Jurassic Pier was opened in 2004 as part of the town's sea defences and stretches around 240 metres out to sea.

Weymouth was the official summer residence of King George III on fourteen different occasions, which led to a big increase in the town's popularity. There is a painted statue of the king on the town's sea front as well as a mounted chalk horse in the nearby hills at Osmington.

Weymouth has been chosen to be one of the venues for the 2012 Olympic Games and will be used for the sailing events in this international sporting event.

Shoppers visiting the town can take a leisurely stroll along the town's pedestrianised streets as well as the shops on the esplanade and a newer shopping precinct that runs from St Thomas's Street down to the harbour.
